Green Pool Water – What to Do?

Every pool or swimming pond owner knows it: summer is just around the corner, and with it, the swimming season. But when you look at the pool water in spring, it’s not just the pool robot that gets a fright. The pool is green and the water is cloudy. But what should you do when your beloved swimming pool is overrun with algae and dirt? The PROFI-Clean team will share some helpful tips and tricks for cleaning your pool.

Why is my pool green?

The water in your pool turning green over time is a completely normal, natural process if care and cleaning are neglected for an extended period. However, improper pool care can also cause unpleasant reactions in the water. Considering that according to a 2023 survey, around 38.4% of German homeowners wish they had their own pool, pool care is an even more pressing issue—one we would like to put an end to.

Fundamentally, the green color is caused by algae, which settle in the pool through the air or dirt particles and multiply there. However, there can be many reasons for such a severe algal infestation:

Changing weather

Significant differences in ambient temperature can cause algae to increase rapidly in a short period. The ideal conditions are around 10 to 15 hours of sunshine and a temperature of 18 to 27°C. In addition, heavy rainfall can severely affect the pool by carrying organic materials from the outside into the pool water.

Water pH level too high or too low

Thanks to various testing systems, an incorrect pH level in the pool water is also easy to detect. Ideally, it should be between 7.0 and 7.4. If the level is below 7.0, the pool water is considered too acidic. If the level is above 7.4, the water often becomes cloudy, and limescale and other harmful deposits form.

Our PROFI-Tip: We recommend adjusting the pH level gradually after measuring it using PROFI-Clean pH Minus (liquid or PROFI-Clean pH Plus Granules (granules). Depending on how large the deviations are, the pH increaser and pH reducer can gently bring the pool water to the target value of 7.0 to 7.4.

The water needs to be disinfected

Basic hygiene is always essential in a pool, yet it is often not optimal at the beginning or end of the pool season. Stagnant water promotes poor cleanliness just as much as the various residues (skin flakes, hair, dirt, sunscreen, etc.) that we carry into the water.

This is where so-called "shock chlorination" helps: this method of disinfection kills all microorganisms, dirt particles, and algae with a single application.

Prevent algae & deposits in the pool

There are also several precautions you can take to prevent the pool from turning green:

  • Measure the pH level and chlorine content once a week
  • Perform regular shock chlorination (you can find chlorine here)
  • Use algaecide
  • Always shower before swimming

Keep pool equipment clean

If you have a filtration system in your pool, you should make sure that it is emptied and cleaned at regular intervals. If algae and other residues remain here after the water has been adjusted and cleaned, the water quality can deteriorate again very quickly.

PROFI-Tip: You don't have a filtration system? Then you can also clean your pool by hand very easily. You can first remove large debris and severe algal growth with a brush and then scoop it out with a net.
