Buying Kerosene: Container Sizes, Price per Litre and Storage

In short: For kerosene heaters, you need low-sulfur kerosene. The best value is a 20-liter container: at PROFI-Clean, it costs €3.80 per liter, around €3.50 in a pack of four – and the container is delivered to your home.

Which kerosene is right for kerosene heaters?

Kerosene heaters and kerosene heating devices are designed for low-sulfur kerosene. It burns evenly and your heater produces less soot. Do not use lamp oil, diesel or heating oil – this can clog the wick and cause odors and soot. If in doubt, check your heater's instructions.

PROFI-Clean Kerosene is low in sulfur and suitable for heating devices and heaters from all manufacturers.

Where can you buy kerosene?

You can buy kerosene at DIY stores, fuel dealers and online. Online has two advantages: you don't have to transport heavy containers yourself, and large containers are usually significantly cheaper per liter. When buying, look for "low-sulfur" and a tightly sealing, approved container.

Storing kerosene properly

  • Store only in the original container or in approved containers, tightly sealed.
  • Cool, dry and well-ventilated – for example in the garage or basement, not in living areas.
  • Away from ignition sources, heaters and direct sunlight.
  • Locked up and out of reach of children and pets.

Heating safely

Ventilate regularly, never operate the heater in the bedroom or unattended overnight, and only refill when the heater is switched off and cooled down. A CO detector gives you additional safety. Everything else about consumption, ventilation and refilling is explained in our guide How to use a kerosene heater properly.

Note: Kerosene is a hazardous substance (can be fatal if swallowed and enters the respiratory tract). Follow the instructions on the label and in the safety data sheet.
